Filtral – The lifestyle counterpart to sunglasses
In 1967, the Filtral brand – at that time still with the addition ‘by uvex’ – appeared on the scene. The sunglasses were as striking as the fashion of the time: large, colourful and flashy. Aviator sunglasses were a big seller, thanks to the cinema hit ‘Top Gun’. The ‘Blake Carrington’ and ‘Krystle Carrington’ models were also very popular. Filtral secured the ‘Denver Clan’ licence for both pairs of glasses.
Buzzing synthesizers and gated snare drums set the rhythm of the times and kept fashion moving at the same pace. The emerging video clips in particular inspired eyewear fashion. Filtral celebrated great sales success with its ‘Disco Dancing’ eyewear series.
Filtral was integrated into the uvex group in 1967. However, it did not become a separate company until 1991. Filtral was initially integrated into uvex's ‘Sports and Leisure’ division on Siemensstraße.
The product range expanded in the 1990s. From then on, uvex also sold reading aids under the Filtral brand. The target group was primarily large retail companies, such as drugstores and supermarkets.
In 1991, FILTRAL GmbH & Co. Vertriebs KG was founded as an independent subsidiary within the uvex group and moved into a new administration and warehouse building in Burgfarrnbach one year later.
In 2016, Primetta, the specialist for sunglasses, became a new member of the uvex brand family. Together, the Filtral and Primetta brands form the third subgroup of the uvex group, the Filtral group.
In 2025, Filtral was awarded the EcoVadis gold medal for the second year in a row. EcoVadis assesses companies in the categories of environment, labour and human rights, ethics and sustainable procurement. EcoVadis is the global standard for sustainability ratings.
