Hiplok - "It's your bike"
The success of the Hiplok brand clearly reflects the company’s guiding principle. Many customers have trusted the innovative security locks of the English manufacturer since its beginnings in 2011. The reasons are often not purely financial – rather, the bike tells part of a very personal story. It therefore makes perfect sense that no compromises should be made when it comes to protection against theft.
2010
The world’s first wearable bicycle lock
The origin of the Hiplok Hero ORIGINAL bicycle lock lies in just such a personal story. John Abrahams had his bike stolen while working at a design firm near London because he did not have a lock with him. He called his fellow student and friend Ben Smith, who was working in the bicycle industry in California. They decided to develop a completely new type of bicycle lock that combined portability and security – and founded a company to bring it to market.
After a year of conception, development and product testing (including a bike ride from London to Brighton), the first wearable Hiplok bicycle lock was sold on hiplok.com on 17 March 2011.
2013
Expansion of the range
Ben and John expanded the Hiplok range and presented the Hiplok D and Hiplok LITE models at Eurobike. The Hiplok LITE, which features the same patented, body-worn design as the Hiplok ORIGINAL but is offered in a lighter, bronze-coloured “Sold Secure” lock body, received the prestigious Eurobike Award.
The growing Hiplok range now includes wearable chain locks, D-locks and cable locks – with further products in preparation. All products continue to be developed from scratch by Ben and John and feature unique, innovative functions that address problems in bicycle security. Hiplok is now sold in leading bicycle retailers worldwide, including REI in the USA and Evans Cycles in the UK.
“This is perhaps the cleverest thing we’ve seen in a long time.” With the launch of the Hiplok Z LOK, Hiplok opened up new markets, as customers began using the innovative security tie to secure everything from bicycles and helmets to snowboards and outdoor equipment. Shortly afterwards, the Z LOK COMBO followed – a version with a combination lock.
2022
Everyday stress is over
In 2022, Hiplok launched the world’s first wearable bicycle lock that was protected against angle grinder attacks. The Hiplok D1000 uses advanced, previously unknown material technology, offering a groundbreaking level of security that had not existed in bicycle locks before. The response from customers, industry experts and the media was phenomenal and paved the way for a new era of protection against angle grinders.
In 2023, Hiplok entered the motorcycle market together with the leading UK retailer “Sports Bike Shop” and the distribution company Nevis. Motorcyclists value Hiplok for its innovative and high-quality locks, including the “1000 Series” product range with locks and anchors designed to protect against angle‑grinder attacks.
A proud moment: in 2024, Hiplok won the “Brand of the Year” award from the British cycling industry.
