uvex looks back on a long history in cycling. For 60 years, uvex products have ensured safety from head to toe during peak athletic performance- from the pragmatic crash ring of the 1960s to today’s high‑tech models. Clear vision was always ensured by stylish, sporty cycling glasses – often equipped with one or two technical innovations.
uvex’s entry into the cycling market took place in the 1960s with the so-called “crash ring”. A padded ring with three leather straps protected the heads of cyclists – a strap with a fastener under the chin kept the ring in place. Compared to the cycling helmets that later came onto the market, the crash ring did not yet feature a rigid plastic outer shell.
The “uvex airtech” was super lightweight and at the same time extremely safe – made possible by the new combination of materials made of EPS and ABS film. EPS stands for expanded polystyrene, which is highly compressed and thus ensures particularly good shock absorption. The ABS film coating prevented sharp objects from penetrating.
In 1987, the time had finally come and the first proper cycling helmet, the “uvex ventura”, was introduced. The “ventura” was marketed as a sporty universal helmet for the safety-conscious amateur. It featured an adjustable chin strap with quick-release fastener, as well as a skin-friendly, removable and washable velour ring.

But uvex did not only set new standards in the field of protective helmets – eye protection also received plenty of attention.
The special feature of these cycling glasses was the clip-on or clip-off smoke lens for sun protection. In addition, the temples were length-adjustable and the upper edge of the glasses was comfortable to wear thanks to a brow spacer with comfort fit holder.
The first glasses with supravision technology impressed not only with their special lens technology, but also with their extraordinary design. The temples and the frame above the lenses were colorfully patterned, and the lenses had a prism-like shape.
In 1993, uvex supravision lens technology came onto the market and is still used today. Supravision lenses have a multiple-hardened surface and therefore a five-times longer service life than an uncoated material. In addition, they are equipped with anti-fog properties.
