The history of durchblick
Growing staff numbers, the turn of the millennium and outdated corporate communications raised the question of how employees of the uvex group should be informed about current company topics.
The solution was rectangular and colourfully printed: with the first issue of the employee magazine durchblick in the year 2000, the annually published Christmas letter was replaced and the foundation for many years of corporate communication was laid. In line with the motto “business is people”, communication was to be improved and employees were literally meant to be given “Durchblick” (insight) into internal company topics – back then still written with a capital D.
Durchblick was published three times a year worldwide, offering up-to-date information on business figures, events, and internal as well as sports-related topics. One particularly popular feature was the uvex prize puzzle. Those who submitted the correct answer had the chance to win one of several high-quality uvex products.
In 2009, the layout underwent its first change. What may have saddened loyal origami fans was likely a delight for those who appreciate simple magazine design. The previously four-times-folded DIN A3 sheets were replaced by smaller, compact A4 booklets. The content also grew to a respectable 24 pages per issue.
With the introduction of the new corporate design for uvex and ALPINA in 2014, durchblick also presented itself with a new look. The magazine title moved to the circular centre, and the words “uvex group” now adorned the magazine’s header. Whereas durchblick had previously been published in two separate editions – one in German and one in English – there was now only one edition, providing the English translation alongside the original German text.
After 19 years and more than 50 issues, the final edition of durchblick was published in May 2019. The reasons for discontinuing the magazine were ongoing digitalisation and the expansion of activities on social media channels. Another reason was the timeliness of the information shared in durchblick: since the magazine was published only three times a year, the “news” was often already three to four months old by the time it appeared.
The printed magazine was replaced by digital alternatives. These include the uvex group newsletter, digital themed magazines and news posts on the intranet. These channels offer faster and more target-group-appropriate distribution of information.
